It has a metal outer facing me and a rubber ring behind with a series of holes in it.
Brute force and ignorance?

The metal outer is the oil seal, the rubber ring behind it with the holes in is the oil seal protector. I use the "claw" part of a claw hammer. Gently insert it behine the metal outer, inbetween the seal and the protector behind it. Then "rotate" the claw and the seal should move.

The generic seal replaces the metal covered seal. The ones I supply dont have the metal outer but it does not seem to make any difference on my car

Thats brilliant. I've got it all in bits, ready to reassemble in time for this weekend.
Got all of it apart easy enough, the retaining ring and bearing race needed some serious grinding to get them to shift though. Still, got to play with my new grinder.
Thanks for the help.
Matt
