Hello All,
I have a 2002 Jimny, 32,000 miles, used maybe 1st a month for RTV's. Gearbox started making a whirring noise and now when trying to select 1st gear, I just have clattering and banging  ! The other gears, with the exception of 5th for some reason, also have a burring noise. Just wondering if it sounds like the whole gearbox has gone...or something else.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like the chain is slipping in the Transfer Box, not the gearbox. The torque in the lower gears cause it to slip but in 4th and 5th you are running at speed so the slip disappears.
I don't think there is a quick way to find out. When mine was doing it you can feel a severe vibration through the transfer lever if you rest your hand on it.

As a new chain was an eye-watering £380 from Suzuki (and you would need to replace the gears as well!!) I simply got a transfer box from the scrap yard for £100.
I still have the box in my shed as I upgraded to a RockLobster. I am also sure other people in this forum have spare boxes in their sheds as they have upgraded as well

Mine has a strong vibration as well on lower gears, but not bothering for now as I will be fitting a rocklobster
I would say change the chain and that should solve the problem ....
