Hello New member with belt problem! was created by Gerbera
Firstly Hi everyone... had my silver Jimny since Nov... still getting to know it.

Had to replace altenator and steering pump belts today, had same problem eveyone else seems to have with sizes... ended up with 2 at 843mm the power steering one was tight getting on but adjusted ok.. the alternator was easier to fit and adjusts well, but it squeels badly! the tighter it is the worse the squeel... when very loose it doesn't squeel but the charge light flickers.. have tried varying taughtness but nothing seems to work.

I will check in the morning to see if the belt is off set somewhere, but in the mean time any ideas please.

Thanks

Ignore what it says in the book about pressing the belt. You need to tighten it until a spanner on the nut in the centre of the alternator pulley will turn the engine over.

You can buy belt lubricant that bizarrely stops it slipping but it is mpossible to get on the fan belt except for one tiny piece.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Thanks for that, I remember having used WD40 before to stop belts squeeling. Surely though, tightening the belt that tight would kill the alternator bearings?
