Have used a tin top auto Jim in Cyprus off road/shooting/fetching Carlsberg and I must say, they are excellent off road.
I drive Pajeros/Landcruisers/Patrols regular in Cyprus, all autos and thay are great. I thought the little Jim would be underpowered but no, it went everywhere the others went and didn't get 'grounded' like some of the bigger boys did.

I have been very pleased with my Automatic Jimny - am on 215/75 mud tyres and copes well with the slight size increaase. Prefer it to the manual one I hired in Greece but that was a little tired so may not be a fair comparison.

Can be a little tail-happy on wet roundabouts but no more than any other Jimny when pushed. Is very controllable on and off road, you soon get used to the points where the gearbox will shift up or down and work with it. A Jimny doesn't need to go fast to feel fast so am happy sticking to 60ish on motorways.

I have a 4.5" lift to fit soon with 31" tyres so will have to see how it copes with that though.

I too have an auto Jimny with rocklobster transfer box and 30x9.50x15 tyres and it works fine. With that combination its good off road and plenty of downhill breaking. The auto boxes can get hot which is terminal for them so I would definitely fit an additional oil cooler but plumb it so that the hot fluid goes through the cooler and then through the bottom of the rad. The reason is that the box is temperature sensitive and won't change into 4th until its up to temperature. In this cold weather it can take a little while, so this way it helps. The other thing to do is to correct the speedo if you change the transfer box or put bigger tyres on as the auto box is electronically speed controlled and it gets confused if the speedo is feeding incorrect information. I used the correction box from Jaycar in Australia as its cheap!
Would I have another - absolutely yes, and I also have an auto Wrangler too which is also great.

Manual VVT, 2 1/2" lift, ORA castor corrected arms, 2" ORA body lift, 4:1 transfer box, Uprated front shafts & CVs ERM , ARBs back & front 3.9 diffs, 6 point cage, ORA winch bumper - Superwinch EP9, ORA rear bumper, ORA axle truses, Diff guards ERM , TBR tank guard, Snorkel, Kumho KL71.30.9.50 15
