Thanks alot everyone for your advise. However im still keen on buying a jimny so i might just fit some smaller knobblys, and just put up with worse mpg at the end of the day for me paying a higher fuel cost is alot cheaper than paying 2 lots of tax, mot and insurance, which is stupidly high because im only 20 :( .

The jimny is something which realy does take my fancy, its different to all my mates running defenders, and from what everyone has sed the few negatives are a small price to pay for the smile they put on your face. :)

For starters just fit 195/80/15 I have special tracks but KL-71 would suit your high distance driving better. Then at weekends you will be able to have more fun than you can shake a stick at jimnys are amazing little cars.

yer will do the tyres and go from there like you say.
Btw i like tht pic of your jimny with the mini insa special tracks. Those tyres really are the best in the mud, but think i might just go for some kumos, bfg MT or insa saharas something slightly less agressive, only because all my mates have special tracks fitted and they seem to eat diffs, front and rear in defender, and front twice in a fourtrack all in less than 8months.

Good read this thread... i didnt realise they were such a pain to drive on the roads. Might have to test drive one to see if its worth me bothering.

Best way to describe them is a "Marmite" car to drive.

Some people love driving them, some people hate driving them and there is no-one in the middle ground.

For your viewing pleasure some pictures of 195/80/15 Insa Turbo Special Tracks! The spare wheelhanger needed mods to stop the tyre hitting the rear bumper. My mate ground the wheel mounting plate off the bracket and welded it back 25mm higher up works a treat

Don Carlyon,
My daughter's car is bog standard and drives fine, Bridgestone tyres, steel wheels T reg, needs plenty of revs, I bought it for her as she goes most places on her own or with one friend and never liked being conned into giving loads of folks a lift home at night when she ran an old escort. The high driving position, ease of parking and the bonus of 4 wd if weather gets sticky are the big attractions but it is not a luxury motor by any stretch of the imagination!
Shortly after we got it I was changing my car, my son wanted to go surfing in Cornwall and daughter wanted to visit some places in France. My wife and son headed down to Cornwall for a week so we took the Jimny from Carlisle to London, Eurostarred to Calais then went over towards Amiens and the Somme battlefields, down to Monet's garden, over to Normandy battlefields, Bayeux and then back up the coast, car never missed a beat was fun to drive and kept up with the flow of French motorways. We must have covered around 1600 miles in about a week so maybe this has some relevance to the 40 mile a day commute :)
Sure there are all sorts of cars but for the money the Jimny is very worth it, believe me I have driven some real dogs of kit cars built by half blind blokes in back yards and there is no comparisin with any of that stuff.
We bought ours from a family where an old bloke had died suddenly and they were really just wanting shot so paid £1500 for car that had been well serviced and had done high 60k miles almost 2 years ago now.
Go for it!

atb
Mike

I think the only way to tell is to drive one myself.

Cheers for the info!
