Five door Jimny, auto or manual? was created by lightning
Looking to buy a five door Jimny for my business. Mainly because
a/our 2020 three door has been totally reliable
b/l want to get out of diesel vehicles
c/l like driving the three door but it's too small for my business use.
There's a few places offering imports and prices have come down.
My only question is, auto or manual? l've never driven the auto but l had a Defender and got used to not having to change gear.
l know there are people on here who drive the new Jimny auto.
ls it smooth, fast enough, nice to drive? l am not bothered that it's slower than the manual, so long as it's good enough. As my day is spent driving between customers in the city.
Do the rear seats fold flat to the floor?
ls it okay on the motorway? As in, can keep to 70mph without changing down all the time.
I can't get a test drive so will have to choose "blind" and from recommendations on here.

The biggest single issue I have with my gen4 is that it has a clutch. My gen3 doesn't and it's great. I've also had a test drive in a 5 door without a clutch and it was lovely. Only 2 things against it for me was it has the same towing capacity and my fleet insurance is import phobic and wanted to really weight the premium for it. That is only a problem because I put everything through the same broker instead of doing everything individually which would have allowed me to probably cut their offer in 4.

I haven't driven a Gen 4 Jimny in Auto and I believe the box is slightly different to the Gen 3 however after getting a late model Gen 3 auto earlier this year I am completely sold on the auto box in a Jimny. Sure when the car is cold the auto box takes its time to warm up and is a bit slow, plus you have to think about overtaking a bit more by downshifting the box if you need to boot it but the driving experience is more relaxing especially for me around town in stop/start traffic. I don't really notice much difference in day to day driving between my Gen 3 auto and Gen 4 manuals. I find the auto box less wearing on my left foot having to change down and use the clutch. I find my driving in the Gen 3 is more relaxed whereas I'm more aggressive with my manual Gen 4s. If I was going out to buy another Gen 4 or Nomade it would be an Auto based on my experience with the Gen 3 this year.
The rear seats do not fold completely flat like the 3 doors so the only room you gain in the Nomade is in the boot. The rear seat leg room is actually the same as sitting in the rear of a 3 door. You just think its bigger because of the doors and boot.
Can't say how it drives on the motorway as we only had a short trip in the countryside in a Nomade . I did find when I bought my Gen 3 auto home on the motorway is that the car seemed to struggle or at least I struggled to find the happy point in which the car would find its gear and settle down. It was constantly changing down and using a lot of revs but perhaps this was just because I was new to the auto box and also I don't do motorway driving really.
Depending on where you are in the country Winterstoke motor company nr Bristol have a few Nomades for sale already registered and ready to go. As some of theirs has some mileage on them perhaps they would do a short test drive.
