Hi,

I use ROWMAPS.CO.UK, that’s Rights Of Way Maps.  It’s free and you can download the BOATS (and Bridleways/Footpaths) as a KML, GPX, Etc. Just use Google Earth (to view the KML) or load the GPX in to your favourite mapping program.  Unlike GLASS you don’t get any comments or description if the route is suitable so you might need to be prepared to turn around if the route is not possible. I also use Outdoor Active App (also a website) they have some 4x4 routes with descriptions. Robin

Just had a quick play and it's definitely easier to use than the council so that's good.

Just got back from a week laning in Wales.

I would say, you just want to make it easy for yourself. With a screen in a 4th Gen you can run a map of some sort on there, although Apple CarPlay does limit what apps will work. I also had an extra phone holder in my Jimny.

I use a similar setup in my Land Rover 90 with a phone and iPad holder.

As per the other thread, the Glass Trailwise 2 is very handy to find out current info and statuses of lanes. Which isn't generally easily available by other means. They have also improved their map with alternative map layers including OS options these days and a follow me mode, although you are restricted to needing internet connection to make it all work. Which in Wales is generally pretty good these days.

Don't get me wrong, there is a lot more Trailwise could offer, such as an off line app variant and better route planning. But it is actually very handy and pretty easy to use, allowing you tag lanes as favourites, which then show up as a different colour on the map.

I also don't condone everything Glass does or has done. But they have recently taken Bedfordshire council to court (for the 3rd time) to get a local lane reopened. Which is good as in the home counties here we have very few lanes. Such a shame the local council decided to waste hundreds of thousands of tax payers money in court fighting a lost battle and for no reason at all other than clearly someone on the council doesn't want lanes to be driven.

There is another company that claims to have similar data to Trailwise 2 and maybe even in app form but I can't remember who they are. I'll have to do some digging, but you needed to pay to use any of it and I thought it was maybe a little too pricey, plus I already had access to Trailwise 2.

Alongside Trailwise 2 I use some OS maps on my phone/iPad. You can either go for the official OS Maps app or something like Outdoors GPS. I pay £19.99 a year subscription for mine and it allows me to download the OS Map areas of my choice across all my devices. This is great for when you don't have signal.

I also find Google maps to be handy as I'll often find or research a lane start point on Trailwise or the OS maps, then find it on Google maps and save the location or share the Google Maps ULR link on a Note. So that I can simply click it to get a proper navigation tool to my start point.

The OS maps also let you record your routes, so you can find them again or keep a record of when or what direction you drove them.

There was a misleading 2nd track on the ground that went off to the left. But as soon as you started down it on Trailwise 2 follow me mode you could see you were going off piste. The OS map shows I backed up (only once, but it looks messier on the snail trail). Both very handy here, as the lane was not at all obvious on the OS maps, but clearly showed a current status on Trailwise 2 with comments and photos from another person having also driven the lane only 16 days prior.
