I'm considering making time for getting back into lanes. As such I have been looking at the north Yorkshire Council definitive maps online, as I have come to expect with the council it's that deliberately difficult to use that you don't want to like everything else they're involved with. So I'm wondering if there's any alternative that is upto date, reliable, easy to use and this is the important one not hidden behind a pay wall or membership program?

And here was me thinking we might have moved past the dark ages. Hey ho, back to the definitive map and a highlighted landranger.

I tend to use Trailwise 2 (GLASS) to check on lanes. As it often as comments from others who have driven it recently. Although I must admit Trailwise is not so great for planning a full route or using while driving. But it does have all the rights of way listed, so you can manually search an area and plan out where you want to go.
On the ground I use GB Outdoors also called Outdoors GPS, which is OS Map based, but you can download the maps to your phone/device. I normally run this on an iPad with a proper mount in the vehicle. Makes it very easy to see where you are and also to record where you've been, but you do need to plan the start points. You can do this to some extent or import a gpx file, but this app isn't great at navigation, so you still need to read the map and find your own way.
I also tend to have Google Maps up on my phone in a separate holder, as it is very good at navigation and you can compile a list of dropped pins, so if you use Notes or something, you can just click the link and nav to your next start point and then use the OS Maps for accurately follow the lane.
None of it is ideal, but it isn't too much bother.
That said, I'm also a firm believer that it is the responsibility of the councils to put up clear signage, the same as they should for any other road. So if you get to a byway and it doesn't say anything, you should assume it is fine to use, same as you would with any paved road.

I'm not going to be drawn on my views on glass as I don't want to start a fight.

For many years GLASS has fought against many county councils who would dearly love to downgrade "Green Lanes" to footpath status and in so doing save themselves cash. Because of GLASS many lanes have remained open but fighting cases in courts costs money and that's where your membership comes in. If you want to use the mapping system available then you should be willing to pay the dues.
