Rust under factory coating? was created by throwyourbike
Having seen so many rusty Jimny’s, I’ve been pretty fastidious about rust proofing my 2023.
I used Dinitrol ML in the cavities and Bilt Hamber UC on the underbody.
Throughout winter I’ve rinsed the underside regularly as well as using Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac and XCP Rust Blocker Clear Coat as a top up.
Today I took a closer look underneath to see how it was doing.
I noticed what looked like rust coming through the factory rubberised coating on a couple of the body mounts.
I picked some of it off to discover that rust is forming underneath.
While it’s very minimal, it’s pretty disappointing. I don’t know what you’d have to do to prevent rust on these things!!

I think in the end its inevitable that all cars will rust at some point and all you can do is buy it time. I think nowadays people are treating their Jimnys better from new and we will perhaps see the latest generation of Jimnys last longer than the previous generations. Keep going with what you are doing and the car will be fine for a long time.

Many products turn hard and brittle, often from UV exposure these days. It is some sort of plastic filler that must have been less used 20 30 years ago. Now it is inside everything chinese and make any and most product fail just about when it is out of warranty.
Rust preventitive should not turn brittle. It should stay flexible and waxy oily. Have seen some do their complete car in bed liner. That will turn into a nightmare, i have seen what happens to it after just a few years of UV rays.
Stupid modern plastic based paints are useless.

I have coated the entire underbody with bitumastic paint. It remains flexible and soft and will not crack as the body flexes.

I always think it’s best to use clear coatings.
I’d rather be able to see what’s going on and be able to fix it before it gets too bad.
Also, I’m really dubious of buying a car with a thick black undercoat. Unless the seller can prove it has been done since new, I always wonder what it’s hiding.
