Has anyone had the valve clearances checked on a Gen 4 Jimny?
Ours is five years old and has done 28,000 miles.....and is due a service, the handbook recommends they are checked at 18,000 or 24 months and they've never been done.
ls it worth asking the dealer to check the valve clearances at the service?
l can't find it mentioned on any forum. But the handbook says check after 18,000 miles or 24 months, then again at 36,000 miles or 48 months.

The design of the cam followers is a one piece bucket which is selected at the factory. This design does not use shims, so any variation in clearance would require extensive stripping of the cams to remove/replace the follower.
My Gen.4 is similar age with 23,000 miles and is quiet and sweet running and that's good enough for me. I shall leave well alone!

My Gen 4 is over 6 years old and has covered 49,000 miles. Over the years I have considered checking the valve clearances but have decided not to.
Early on in the life of the Gen 4 in the UK I heard that no valve cover gaskets were available. This would have caused problems with checking valve clearances as reusing the old gasket would likely cause oil leaks. I'm not sure about availability of the gasket these days.
My engine runs smoothly and quietly. However, I believe wear in the valve gear would decrease the valve clearances so there would be no clattery noises associated with it.
Maybe one day I will buy a gasket and spend an otherwise quiet day checking the valve clearances.

Valve clearances when cold.
Inlet:- 0.14mm - 0.23mm
Ex.:- 0.3mm - 0.4mm
There is lot of freeway here so the likelihood of a discrepancy is small.

My 2019 SZ5 missed the first year that the valve clearances were supposed to be checked due to the shortage of gaskets at the time. Because my car does so few miles and and the dealer couldn't hear any weird noises decided it was best to leave it. It was then checked the following year when the gaskets were back in stock.
