Nothing is wrong I'm not fault finding, I'm just after knowledge.
Obviously it will have a computer running the engine i accept that. There is also a controller for the 4x4 system and in my case the transmission, there's also the abs stability and traction system. What I'm wanting to understand is how many of the systems are self contained with their own computer and how many are incorporated into the main ecu?

the TPMS on very later models is on its own module, as well as the remote central locking.

Overall the architecture in modern Jimnys has changed.
Very early cars were all centred around the ECU but as the years have progressed they have moved to a more modern system where each important system has its own controller
Core to this is the CANBUS communication bus. On this bus sits the ECU (engine control unit) which is now relegated to engine management. The management of everything else is overseen by the BCU (body control unit) and its "team" of sub-controllers such as the TCU (transmission control unit)
Some controllers dont "talk canbus" so there is a gateway control unit that connects separate buses into the Canbus so that the BCU has an overall view of everything.
The ECU focuses on engine management but can interwork with BCU, TCU etc. where, for example, what gear the car is in is relevant to the engine settings. Everyone talks and listens on the canbus for the information they need for their function.
Attached is the canbus for the gen4 Jimny, the late gen3 are very close to this.
