I find it works perfectly well, so well I tend to forget it's there doing its stuff.
I very rarely use the hand brake though, unless I have actually parked up (plus the brake lights are not retina burners!).
I am sure it also works facing backwards up hill, when you want to reverse up.

Yes, I would expect it is just using the ABS/TCS sensors to detect wheel movement.

I too have found it very handy. Off road on technical terrain it works great. Often when you've stalled it due to the TCS kicking in.... :o

Also worked great with the caravan on the back when pulling out of the yard as there is a bit of a slope as you go out onto the road.
