I find it works perfectly well, so well I tend to forget it's there doing its stuff.
I very rarely use the hand brake though, unless I have actually parked up (plus the brake lights are not retina burners!).
I am sure it also works facing backwards up hill, when you want to reverse up.

Yes, I would expect it is just using the ABS/TCS sensors to detect wheel movement.
I too have found it very handy. Off road on technical terrain it works great. Often when you've stalled it due to the TCS kicking in....
Also worked great with the caravan on the back when pulling out of the yard as there is a bit of a slope as you go out onto the road.
