Do we know how this system works, is it purely hydro-mechanical or is there a controller? I ask because it seems really quite dim witted in that on probably 40% of occasions I'm finding it is holding me as I lift the clutch which then causes me to dip the clutch again to be sure it's released which is often enough to miss a gap or worse with a trailer on cause initial momentum to be lost which then causes either a stall or dragging the clutch, it just seems a bit numb. I'm wondering if it's just mine and therefore acute and worth a look at a dealer or if they are all like it and I have to adapt to it?

I have the auto and have never noticed it holding when I accelerate. I can feel it release a couple of seconds after taking my foot off the brake when stationary. I don't think if you can disable it in 2H. You can in 4L.

I'd say your description maybe doesn't tally fully with my experience with my Gen 4.
The hill hold is handy, but I'd say a little fickle sometimes. It doesn't Hold for very long, couple of seconds really. And as soon as you move the clutch pedal it will disengage. i.e. no good having it out of gear, activating hill hold then pushing the clutch pedal down to select a gear, as it'll release the moment the clutch pedal starts to move.
It does work the other way round, so stopped on a steep incline, keep your foot still with the clutch pedal all the way down, activate hill hold and it will hold the vehicle long enough for you to apply throttle and and pull away without rolling back, just don't take too long, as once you take your foot off the brake pedal you really only do get a few seconds before it auto releases. But I've never felt as though it drags or prevents the vehicle moving forwards.

It uses the ABS pump.
Yours is working fine, @300bhpton's notes are the perfect guide for proper use.

Like I say it is not constant and bad but it does seem to pock it's moments. Making me think it might be an acute issue with my Jimny. I'm going to missisippppppppy it because I would say it feels like mine holds for like 10 plus seconds. The fact that it only works when facing up hill forward does make me think it has a control element and therefore maybe some adjustment is available

No, really, there is no control element and no adjustment. Yours is working the way it is supposed to.
The driver needs a small adjustment to his technique, and all will be well.
