Hi all. Any reason why a bearing would let go prematurely? I seem to get through rears regularly. Anyway, tried to go to Alps in June, but bearing went and no garage wanted to go near it. Put that one down to being sat for a while in silty water on Salisbury Plain. Only done about 3k miles, and 1 weekend in the Lakes with new bearing. Set off to Alps again, and same bearing has gone! Same story, limping back to Calais the scenic route. Any ideas on why? Ready for giving up on it. 2007, 78k on it.

There are just so many possibilities here - incorrect parts, poor quality parts, poor workmanship and that is assuming the vehicle is stock & unmodified.
If you're running larger tires than stock, wider wheels, different offset, wheel spacers, and the list goes on.
By the way, I'm assuming you mean rear wheel bearings here, because you weren't specific.

Could be many things but first off after it was changed because of having been dunked in Salisbury what else was changed and or inspected?

Hi, yes, rear wheel bearing. Fairly standard car, 215/75/15. Was done in a garage in France (eventually!). Doubt anything else was checked over. Parts unknown, just a bit gutted I have a second failed Alps attempt for same reason.

My concern would be that all the contamination from Salisbury which I understand is much like abrasive paste may well not have been totally removed and caused this second failure?

Just to clarify, how did you determine the wheel bearing had failed on each occasion? What were the symptoms?
