Cracknells garage in Summerbridge. I wouldn't trust the rest of them to tell me the time if they were stood under the railway clock.

With a Quaife LSD the only downside is the cost. It's a fit and forget item in terms of servicing and improves the way the car drives. Quaife LSDs have been an optional upgrade on many performance cars because of the way they improve traction and handling without any negative drawbacks. The enthusiasm on here for LSDs makes me want to have some too, despite the fact that I never felt I was in need of one!
What are the downsides of a LSD as opposed to the standard diff (on a Jimny w/o any TC)?

Very nicely put - Quaife LSDs are great in high performance cars on high traction surfaces - BUT - is that an accurate description of your Jimny and where you plan on driving it?
Lose traction on one wheel with a Quaife LSD and you might as well have an open differential.
The choice should be based on the use case.

With no load, as in wheel in the air they will function much like an open diff (unless you left foot brake or have traction control). But with wheels on the ground, they will make both wheels spin. Which you can clearly see with the pickup Land Rover video I posted earlier.
This is why cars like the GT-Four Celica has TorSen diffs because they are good for rallying on loose surfaces like gravel. It is also the reason why companies like Quaife and Ashcroft transmissions also sell ATB diffs for 4x4's. Its not because they are being used to track days at Silverstone or the Nurburgring. Its because people generally use 4x4's for off road use and on loose or slippery surfaces.
If these diffs where no good for this use as a basic principle, such companies wouldn't bother spending effort, money and time developing them.

Hi, afraid that isn't how a Quaife, aka ATB (automatic torque biasing, often known as a TorSen, for Troque Sensing) works.
