Just seen this thread, and I think you're having a similar issue to what I (and a few other Jimny owners on here and other socials) are having.
Can you confirm you've got the following issues, it might be the same problem.
- Rough idle, very lumpy as if it's going to stall.
- Loss of power, again lumpy acceleration in all gears, and you have to rev. the tits off it to get anywhere.
- It's intermittent, as in it will appear briefly then all go back to normal (mine's not done it for a few months!)
- There is NO warning lights displayed on the dash.
As others have said, I think it may be an ignition issue as the coils are on a relatively warm part of the engine, it's 17 years old so they're probably original too.
I've got a replacement set of OEM ones but I've yet to fit them as she's behaving very nicely!

I have very similar problems to the ones you have experienced. Yesterday I drove it very hard up and down hills for approximately 10 miles without a problem and suddenly lost power up the last mile which was all up hill. I had to crawl up hill in first gear with my hazard lights on. If I tried to accelerate the engine revved wildly. There were no dash lights but the noise sounded like a blown exhaust which is highly unlikely because I had a new cat fitted at the last MOT which was only a few weeks ago and the car has not done 50 miles since the MOT.
Coils and plugs seem to be where I should be directing my search.

So the engine is revving hard but there is so associated increase in road speed? Sounds rather clutch related. If at a standstill with the hand brake applied and you select 5th gear and gently raise your foot off the clutch does it stall the engine?

Hi Lambert,
I just tried to start in 5th gear, I can get the car moving slowly if I keep the revs up but it stalls after a couple of yards. I have tried several times and each time it stalls and if I just let the clutch in slowly it stalls immediately without moving.

Ok so that suggests that the clutch is probably in reasonable condition.

Thank you Lambert, I must admit I did have an anxious moment.
The guy who organised the MOT has now returned and the original suggestion that plugs and point should be replaced came from the tester when the cars was running so it makes sense to follow his advice.
I will update the forum as and when things happen.
Many thanks for everyones help, it is much appreciated.
