Hi all,

I'm in the final stages of importing a Jimny Sierra 2024 from Japan and I've just received my V55/5 back saying that my Jimny is in the "PLG" tax class, instead of a Petrol Car.
My Jimny is a 4 seater, so surely the car wouldn't be classified as a "Private/Light goods vehicle"? There's no spacy to carry anything, nor do I have the mesh that's there in the UK models.

This classification would cost £360, instead of the £195 I was expecting to pay.

These cars both show that it's £195, so I want to ask you guys how much are you paying for tax? Do I need to call them and challenge them on this, or do I just pay up?
Please help...
Thank you!
EDIT: Also even before sending the V55, I called DVLA and asked the representative how much I should pay, and they quoted me £195...

PLG is the default tax class when there isn't a type approval certificate for that particular car at UK registration that gives it's CO2 figure (not a generic figure you look up on t'interweb it must be for that VIN number) and is done on engine size*. The Gen 4 just scrapes into the Super Expensive band (1549cc +) - a Gen 3 is in the lower (expensive) band.

You could get more VFM if you imported something with a decent sized engine, as it would be the same tax cost (but they would still sting you for luxury car supplement on top if it was more than £39,999.99 when new.)

*no it doesn't make sense, as VED is no longer anything to do with emissions, everything pays the same basic rate now.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

After spending another hour with DVLA on the phone, The rep effectivelly said the same thing. Thanks!
The original rep that quoted me 195 must've been confused...

Do you guys know if there are there any services that can be used to measure the emissions and then use that certificate/data for DVLA and reduce the tax burden that way?

See the following

insidedvla.blog.gov.uk/2017/03/31/new-ve...hicles-are-affected/

If the vehicle has a type certificate, the CO2 value will be used, if not the class will be PLG.

Unfortunately you are probably facing an uphill struggle to get it changed and might have to take it on the chin, obtaining type approval could be very expensive.
