Hi all,I’ve just bought an 05 Jimny VVT as a little project, but I’m completely new to working on them. I knew that 4WD drive wasn’t working but when I bought it, but I’m struggling to diagnose the issue.  Symptoms:
  • Green 4WD light just flashes continuously
  • 4WD button does nothing – no click or noise from transfer box
  • Front propshaft is engaged, which worries me a bit, but front diffs are not locked.
Not sure if these are related but also:
  • Oil leak around the transfer box area but think it may be coming from the gearbox
  • High-pitched whining sometimes when going into reverse, but persists in other gears (again could be gearbox or transfer related?)
Checked the fuses and they’re fine, and double checked that hubs aren’t locked.  If anyone has any ideas on potential issues or diagnostics methods I would really appreciate it!  Cheers,Issac

Welcome to the forum.

The persistent whine will probably be the main gearbox, from 05 to 09 these have an issue with the design of the internal bearings and are prone to failure.

The oil leak is probably through the centre of the output yoke of the front joint of the gearbox to transfer box drive shaft, they can either be fixed with epoxy or replaced with a newer one.

No 4x4 could be a few things but most likely it is that the vacuum pipes to activate the front hubs have corroded and are leaking, if the system doesn't see stable vacuum it will switch back to 4x2. Alternative being the wiring for the transfer box is damaged as it is fairly exposed under the car.

There is also a plug on the bottom front of the transfer case that is vulnerable to damage. Check that both wires are attached to the plug.

There's a good chance it's the actuator on the transfer case at fault. They sit unused for years (because most Jimny owners never use 4wd) and accumulate dirt and corrosion. Then a new owner get's in, excitedly presses the 4wd button and the actuator grinds into action and gets jammed up. In your case it's moved far enough to engage the front prop and that's it. Then the whole system becomes unresponsive and the light of confusion flashes.

They are DIY serviceable. Take it off and clean it up.
Then check your vacuum hoses and if they are problematic bypass the whole lot with some 4mm ID PVC hose. Another easy DIY job.
