Second opinion on a second Jimny

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are considering buying another Jimny to sit alongside our 2023…. his and hers lol

A 2005 model with 40k miles on it has come up at a local dealership.
The salesman very kindly put it up on a ramp and took some photos of the underside for me and to my untrained eye it looks pretty clean.

Obviously I need to see it in person and check behind the headlights etc. but I’ve viewed much rougher examples half the age.

I guess I’m just looking for a second opinion from people with more experience.

What do you reckon?

Always difficult to tell from some photos. If you have the registration (number plate) check the MOT history on

www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

That will give you a clue if it has had problems.

Thanks DrRobin

It failed an MOT in 2018 and again in 2023.

I’m in Northern Ireland and it’s a Northern Ireland car, so I can’t see what it failed on unfortunately.

From the pictures it looks really quite good especially at 20 years old. As to having more than 1, I would suggest that every jimny needs a jimny friend because you wouldn't want it to be lonely!

Temeraire (2018 quasar grey automatic)
One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.
Bellerophon (2024 grello van daily
ADOS Attention Deficit Ooooh Shiny!

I say this every time someone asks me about buying a used Jimny, in fact any used car: have a third-party inspection done before you buy it. It will absolutely be the best money you ever spent, and might save you from a huge financial hit.

Nobody ever listens, of course, but I have to keep saying it.

2005 - 2007 is known for gearbox failures and being low mileage I would guess it's on the original box unless it's been done. If so you may have to budget for a gearbox rebuild at some point. Listen very carefully for any noise coming from the box. They can just let go without much warning. Mine went downhill very quickly.
