Steering Wheel Swap Success was created by Island_Jimny
Hi all,
I just did a steering wheel swap and because I couldn't find any confirmation it is possible I thought id take the risk.
I have a 2001 soft top and the one thing which really showed its age was the steering wheel. Crusty, unglued and it was just bugging me.
I found a wheel listed for 2005-11 versions, all leather and lovely.
the disassedisassembly and reassembly went just as described in other posts.
The trick is that although the connections look different they are infact the same.
The newer wheel has an adaptor which can be popped out and then the old one can slot in.
The difficult bit is getting the connector out of the old wheel.
There are 3 barbs/tabs on the connector you need to get to and release. I used a hooked Stanley blade and rotated the connector. This bend the pins in the process of removal but you may find a better way.
I just wanted to post this up incase someone is thinking of doing a swap.
thanks

If you have office hands then don't worry but if you have sand paper hands like I do just be aware that the leather on those wheels shows wear quite quickly and it's best to use a sacrificial cover of some sort. On my last jimny I wore through 2 paracord wraps in 70k miles
