Engine required

Engine required was created by okdaly
Hi all,

First time posting. I've just got hold of a structurally very solid 1998 Jimny.

Unfortunately it is a non runner, long story, but it seems that while undergoing a DIY repair the timing belt was incorrectly fitted, then the engine was run.

Upshot is it now won't start. So suspecting all the usual catastrophic damage, I'm assuming a new engine at this stage.

Looking for recommendations on sourcing a G13BB engine for this lovely little truck. The rest of it is in such great condition that it's definitely worth spending the money to get it back on the road.
I'm happy to either pay someone to do it all, or get an engine and fit myself. I'm a fairly good amateur mechanic, and it's a small simple engine so I reckon I'd be up to the task.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations or advice.

I would say don't assume anything - start by determining WHY the engine won't start.

If you suspect piston/valve contact has occurred do wet & dry compression tests and if necessary follow it up with a leak down test. The compression test numbers will be lower than book numbers with a cold engine, but, the leak down test will reveal IF there is leakage past the valves.

Excellent thanks. I'll try and get to that this weekend.

First things first though, I'll need to determine whether the timing is off.

Are there any markers on the crank or camshaft on this engine?

Apologies if this is basic knowledge, I haven't worked on one of these engines before, and there is a big plastic cover over the timing belt.

Please note the cam sprocket has two timing marks - you're using the "E" mark

I'm fairly certain that the G series engines in Jimnys are non-interference, meaning it is not possible for the valves to hit the pistons and incorrect timing won't cause any damage.
