Steering Wheel Controls - Jimny GEN3 - using 2011 Suzuki Swift Steering Wheel

My 2008 gen 3 came with an aftermarket Pioneer headunit, but the volume/screen controls are really messy/distracting. I'd read @Talkstar's great post about adding a Swift steering wheel for the functions, along with the BigJimny wiki (with Talkstar's modification info) to change the steering wheel (links at the end) and fancied a go at this.

I sourced a very cheap 2011 Swift steering wheel from an eBay scrappy (£8.95!!). See pics. I chose this wheel, as I specifically wanted phone controls too. If you go for this style of wheel, be careful not the get the version with cruise control buttons, these will never work on a gen 3 Jimny. I also sourced a Liana clockspring with the additional functions wiring (£19 eBay), all explained by Talkstar in the Wiki.

My biggest worry was the Swift's airbag being compatible with my gen 3's airbag module. The BigJimny wiki is quite strict that you should have the same airbag part numbers (mine weren't!). However, I noticed that the airbag connectors were the same, so disconnected the battery, removed the old airbag/plugged in the swift airbag and powered it back up. No errors on ignition or after starting the car. I was pretty amazed that an airbag from a Swift, 5 years newer than my gen 3 actually worked! I guess this is a risk, but it's certainly worth a shot if you can get the parts cheap.

I then made Talkstar's suggested modifications to the new wheel (rear slots etc,) and Liana clockspring trimming (see Wiki).

After wiring in the function buttons (3 wires), they didn't work. Steering function buttons are simple on most cars, with a specific amount of resistance being added for each button in the circuit. I've micro-soldered before, but didn't fancy looking up all the resistances (for nine buttons!) and then purchasing the correct value surface mount resistors and then soldering them on. It was much easier to buy a used Connects2 Suzuki Swift steering functions kit for £20 on eBay (ctsszz002.2). The Swift kit connectors were compatible with my gen 3s original radio plug and the Pioneer and all buttons then worked! Note, to get the steering wheel buttons to light at night, there's a couple of additional wires that you'll need to tap into the dashboard back lighting - for mine, I tapped into the unused heated seat connector (Japanese market), which was taped to the loom behind the heater controls.
