Hello everyone !
I am Abdullah from Turkey. My wife used a Suzuki Swift 1.3 4x4 2006 for over 6 years now. She had a very nasty car accident last month and totaled the car. We are still waiting for insurance payment and stuff like that. But we have been discussing what other car we should get and she told me she was interested in the Jimny. I have liked this car for quite some time now, and I am very looking into it.Basically what I want to ask you guys is which model/year we should get. I read the pinned topic about how to buy a Jimny. And it seems that a 2005 SOHC Manual is ideal.Anyway our requirement : %70 city, %30-20% Off Road. Very little highway, only when necessary. This will be our second car, as I already have a Touareg 3.2 2004. We know more or less how to go off road, and we will not do any "extreme" off roading. Only Mud and snow because we go camping a lot.I want to ask you guys. Which year should we focus on, as I am lost a little and it seems there is so much difference between years. Also the prices here in Turkey are astronomical :
13.000 Euro for the cheapest Jimny (2004/200.000km 1.3 JLX-No Mods) and I am more interested in 2010 models are around 20.000 Euro.
Anyway Here are my questions :
- Is there engine difference between 2004 and 2010, as it seems that the 2010+ models are 1328cc while 2004's are 1298cc.- Should we go for a Manual version or Automatic. Or is there a too big loss in automatic to go off roading. What are you experiences.- I saw some chronicle problem such as RUST and CV Joint. Is there something else to look for.- Is there a particular year I should look at.- Any other info that might help. Thank you for your help and take care.

Happy New Year!
From 1999 to 2000 the engine is the G13 1298cc.
then from 2001 and later the engine is the m13 but there are some imporvements like VVT that came in 2005.
the spanish cab jimnys are mostly (all?) G13 engines until production stopped. not sure if this is correct also in your market, southern europe may or may not get the same cars as northern europe and some specs can vary thru the years.
Here all jimnys from 2004 got AC and ABS but other markets got that earlier.
( Your late Swift by the way was most likely made in hungary(?) like my red Swift 2006 4x4. )
The jimny gearbox from 2005 until 2009 facelift are not as good as the others and are known to fail.
Rust as you say and the gearbox is what potentially be the highest service cost and maybe the now hard to get G13 engine. CV joints are not so costly and not so usual to get problems with in my opinion.
I would primarily look for rust and try to avoid the 2005 to 2009 due to the gearbox. And living in turkey buy one with AC of course.
Also the 2005 to 2009 have bad seats, less comfy and rear seat do not fold flat.
Turskish prices are a bit higher than here in Norway sounds like 40%.
Jimnys for sale in Norway today:
2012 165000km 9500 Euro
2004 106000km 9000 Euro
2004 80000km 8500 Euro
Your currency is like our NOK a bit weaker than the Euro too?
Is it possible to import a car from neighbouring EU- countries to Turkey?
Many cars are exported from Norway now due to the currency. 10-15 years ago it was the other way around.

Thank you for the clarifications !
No unfortunately you cannot import cars from abroad in Turkey. And Import taxes as well as car taxes are enormous. +80 at least and up to +%400 on car above 2.000 cc. So importing a car is out of question.
But thank you for the clarification. Will look a facelift version. (To be honest I didn't even knew they were facelift in this generations ! :S )
Anyway, I think I will settle for a 2010 Jimny.
What about Automatic transmission ? Should I go for one ? What are the pros and cons.
In my personal opinion since the Jimny has Low Gear even a 1,3L might be enough. But I did not try and this is totally from a guessing person who has never tried one.
Last note, how do I see if it is the right model except from the outside look ?
Thanks !

They are all 1.3 liter engines, with no noticeable difference in performance. only a slight better tech engine on the m13 and with the VVT models.
G13 can throw a rod out the side and the m13 can blow a head gasket. but it is not so common. The newer has less problems but that can just as well be because they are less old
serviced and well maintained they can all do many km's
The front bumper has a slight facelift around 2010. Those will be the ones with the upgraded gearbox, at least here in Norway. but in other markets it might not be that easy to see and may no follow the gearbox upgrade.
The auto gearbox has no known issues that is of concern. I like to be a bit more active when driving and do not live in a city so I like the manual. I think the auto can feel a bit more lazy maybe, but with an auto there is no clutch that wear out.
Good Luck and welcome as a forum member and soon to be Jimny owner!

Of the 5 jimny I have had 3 have been automatic including my current 2. I will not be going back to manual. The automatic is much better off road once you have a few miles under your belt. In town it's so much calmer and because of the overdriven 4th it will cruise long distances easily.
