Towbar on Jimny 2004 was created by Gillian
I bought my 2004 Jimny secondhand with a towbar fitted. Budget Insurance want to charge me an additional £500.00 to update my policy as a modification. I wanted to check with the forum whether towbars came standard on Jimnys or whether it is in fact a modification. Also, can anyone recommend a Jimny friendly Insurance company?
Thanks

Wow! OK so they were an accessory from suzuki and the car comes with mounting holes already in the chassis. That said I would be surprised if many are actually from suzuki mine is a towtrust one.

The problem with insurance companies is that they will look for any reason to load the price.
A tow bar is a modification unless every vehicle of that model comes with one fitted.
Some insurance companies don't car about tow bars are less worried if the tow bar is a genuine one.
The solution is to do one of two things:
- Go on a compare site and put in a standard car, see what premiums you get;
- Then change it to add a tow bar as a modification, if you find a quote that isn't too expensive go with it.
Or, do you need a tow bar? If not take it off.

Let's be fair, the entire insurance industry is fundamentally corrupt. It's not a safety net for consumers it's a license to print money for board members and share holders.

Thanks for the advice. I used a comparison site and found another insurance company that had a reasonable premium.

And as it is not a modification, I don't see why you'd even need to tell an insurance company, it is a standard part.

I wouldn't say it is a modification. The vehicle is designed to tow and has a tow rating. Tow bars are also dealer supplied and fitted, so aka as from manufacturer. They are just an option you need to tick when buying.A tow bar is a modification unless every vehicle of that model comes with one fitted.
