Screeching grinding noise??? was created by 300bhpton
Something new....
A weird screeching grinding noise. Best way I can describe it, is a similar sound to what the trains on the London Underground make when they are slowing/braking coming into the station. sort of sounds metal on petal with a bit of a pulsing sensation. Occasionally a less metallic rubbing noise as though something is rubbing while rotating.
The noise happens mostly at low speed, i.e. straight line and rolling at walking pace. It doesn't do it every time and sometimes when going round a round about, all low speed stuff. If it makes any noise at speed I can't hear it. Although you start to fool yourself that something is audible at speed. But the noise is quite loud when it happens and it certainly isn't doing the same thing at speed.
What I have determined so far.
The footbrake nor handbrake have any impact or influence. My first thought was a dragging brake shoe, but I'd expect more consistency in it happening. And for the noise to change if I apply braking force. This doesn't happen.
Revving the engine also has no impact. Nor is there any difference with it being in gear or not or with the clutch up or down.
Basically, I've not found anything that influences the noise when it happens. If you let the vehicle roll at walking pace until it stops, the noise appears to get worse the slower you go, as in louder and just worse sounding. It also feels like there is some resistance to the rolling, but can't confirm this. Although I'm sure there is a sensation through the gearstick that matches the pulses when doing this.
I do have the service activated warranty, but would like some idea what is going on before taking it in.
I've heard someone say about an air system causing this. Which I'm guessing might be related to the vacuum hubs? Is there anything I can check on this?
Or other suggestions on what else to look for?
Vehicle is 4.5 years old, 32,000 miles. Well maintained (dealer serviced), looked after and not abused.
Thanks.

Stone trapped behind brake shield?
Hubs normally make a sort of ratchet noise if they are sticking as they have a toothed end

Seconded either a stone wedged behind the brake shield or the shield itself is in contact with the rotor. I've had it before and it's a horrible noise.

I would say stone trapped in one of the front discs, except my other non-Jimny car started doing the same thing, I checked for a stone, didn't find one and moved the brake shield, but it made no difference.
The car needed new discs and what I found was part of the old disc had come away and was trapped on the inside of the disc, every now and again it would move in to a bad position. Mind I also had the clue, braking that was more and less efficient as the wheel turned.
It could be worth driving along with a friend and lower a window to see if you can track which wheel is causing the problem or even get the friend to listen from outside at walking pace.
I would whip the wheels off and have a look, possibly spin the wheel by hand, it will be obvious which one it is. If it's not a stone, then other possible causes are a wheel bearing, possibly a CV, possibly a diff and slightly more remote the Transfer Case.
