The 4wd capability on my Jimny won't be used for long periods. Is it good practice on occasions to engage the transfer box at standstill to keep things working?

Yes, go onto a gravel car park and go in an out of 4WD every few months to stop it all getting stuck. This is particularly essential on the push button version where if you do not exercise the mechanism it will almost certainly stick when you do need it.

If you can't find a loose surface, you can do it on tarmac as long as it's only a few yards in a straight line.  As long as you get the steady green light, the system is working.

My friend bought a 2005 Jimny and drove it round for months with the 4wd engaged.

lt's sometimes a bit funny on corners she said. In her defence her previous vehicles were Defenders which have full time 4wd

Anyhow, the Jimny transmission survived, she had the vehicle for a couple of years after that.
