Pulleymageddon! Oh no more belts.

The Jimny had taken to screaming recently so dutifully I decided to get the belts replaced; who can say how long they've been on now... Good idea! ...So far so good no belt squeal at all, been about 3/4 of a mile...Back home now, I should park up! 
Full lock.
Reverse. 
Brief unusual change in the feeling of my steering...
Terrible fapping noise up front followed by an unheard of metallic spinning noise!




One Delaminated Crank Pulley 


Radiator was also crap so replaced as well.


Thanks to the BigJimny store for getting me the parts so quickly! Don't worry Jimny I won't take you around back and shoot you just yet...

p.s. I tried my best to adjust the picture size but for the life of me it just wouldn't change from being gigantic. Perhaps some helpful mod can sort this out.

Lucky you were at home when it went, otherwise without a water pump you would soon over heat.

My Jimny spat both belts off outside the house, I thought it was odd, so just refitted them to the correct tension, they were slightly slack. I got about 10 yards, it did the same thing again, turned out to be the pulley. It wasn’t as obvious as yours but it had still had it.

I should put your pulley in the hall of fame, I don’t suppose there are as many that fail as catastrophically as yours.

I'm glad you (as I did) have a silver lining to the situation being close to home!

Indeed in all my years of owning various money pits I've never seen a pulley fail as badly... I knew something was amiss when it happened, it produced a spinning 'metal top' grinding to a stop on concrete sound which made me think that it was more than just a belt letting go. Hard to describe but not your usual belt flapping around in the breeze.

The pulley bolt, left hand thread on that? Thinking I need to get some leverage on the go perhaps...

I thought falling apart was fairly normal- mine did it too.

I'd been getting the screeching vibration under acceleration for a few days, and I couldn't find anything wrong.
(Now I know to check that pulley first when there are odd noises or vibrations, I had it down to something loose on/in the exhaust)

I pulled away from some lights and the vibration stopped - and the ignition light came on.
I just pulled over and summoned the AA for recovery. The pulley outer was wedged under the radiator somewhere.

Then it took me a week to get the crank bolt undone, I eventually bought a new bolt and used the grinder to cut the flange off it, and it undid with my fingers.
