Are you referring to the "cooler" pipes that run between the auto transmission and the heat exchanger in the radiator?
I've never heard of these being a "scheduled replacement" item on any vehicle, I want to suggest you check the service schedules in your owner's manual for guidance on replacement. There may be a scheduled "inspection", but I doubt it's a scheduled replacement - I don't have a manual for a Gen3, I checked my Gen4 and that says inspect for the hoses, not the pipes.
Replacement - replacing the hoses is what I would consider easy, but please bear in mind, I don't know your "skill set", two hoses secured by spring clips, do it with the engine/transmission cold, have some old newspaper handy to mop up the spilt transmission fluid (it's not going to be a lot) and a liter of fluid to top it up, you'll have most of the liter left over.
If the pipes need changing that will be a different matter, accessibility is where the challenge will lie.
Personally, I'd say if they are not leaking and don't look corroded (the metal pipes), leave them be, just check the fluid level at regular intervals as you would the engine oil & coolant.
Transmission fluid levels need to be checked with the transmission warm and the engine running, shift through all the gears with your foot on the brake, from park all the way to low pausing for a few seconds in each position, then back to park and check with the engine idling.
Thanks for the reply - yes, these seem to be the only pipes there are from the autobox. I'll have a good look at them but it's only a 61 plate so they should be ok. I have changed lots of hoses (coolant and brake) before on other cars, although it's not my favourite job.
