Wheel Size upgrade without scraping wheel well? was created by G0bble
Hello Folks,
My 5-Door Jimny will arrive in a months time. I want to swap my wheels from my existing gen.2 to the new car as the 4x4 rim design I like are hard to find in my country and I love the new tyres I got last year.
Are the OEM wheels on the gen.4 ET22? I know the gen.2 came with 5.5J ET22. The wheels I currently use are 7J 139.7x5 PCD with ET-18 with tyres 225/70/15. And as seen on the Rim&Tyre size guide website (see attached diagram) - A wheel swap may result in scraping the cladding of the wheel well. But that is a generic diagram not specific to the Jimny.
Many of you would have upsized your wheels - posting here to enquire whether the 7J ET-22 225/70/15 will fit without any mods on the current gen Jimny? Or will there be any scraping?
FYI I intend to upgrade to an OME or Ironman suspension later once the 5D is exported to Aus and new upgraded parts for the 5D are tested and put on the market. But I need to drive the new Jimny without any suspension mods for a year until that happens, as I intend to sell my Gen.2 as soon as my Gen.4 arrives after a wheel swap.
Also want to know if the bolts on the rear 5th wheel door mount are longish enough to accommodate 7J tyres? I had to weld in a longer bolt to mount the spare 5th wheel on my gen.2.
Thanks for your inputs on this.

One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

The factory wheel on both the 3 and 4 is an et 5 offset with a 5.5j width. The largest the 3 door will take is a 215,75r15 without rubbing on standard suspension. A 235,75 may require some trimming and is going to start to affect the gearing. Wider rims with more offset will make rubbing more likely especially at full compression of the wheel into the arch. I can't imagine that the 5 door is going to be noticeably different for wheel fitment but we're not getting them here and therefore cannot be certain.

Looks like I had input wrong OEM wheel offset for comparison (ET22 vs ET5) which impacted the estimated calculations. Now the diagram shows a bit of clearance (see new attachment). I will know for sure once the car is in my hands. But it looks more hopeful now.
Thanks

Turns out I need not have worried about anything even up to a 0mm clearance gap. I saw some off-road videos of the new Jimny with extreme articulation (as much as feasible with OEM suspension) and the wheel on the compressed side slants inwards due to the solid axle making an angle - giving extra clearance - that too the top of the wheel barely kisses a theoretical horizontal line drawn at the cladding.
