5 Door Jimny Question (Australia)

Hi all,

I am new here and just have a question regarding the 5 door Jimny. I have never been interested in cars but the Jimny is the first car I have ever really been interested in, I am looking to purchase a new Jimny. I went to the dealership yesterday was told the specs had been released to them on the day however there is no brochures available yet. However I was told the weight difference is 100kg more than the 3 door Jimny (also the price is an additional $3k AUD). I have seen the Jimny's weight capacity is only ~300kg roughly. If the weight is 100kg than the 3 door does this mean the capacity is only 200kg? Or is that not really how cars work? (like I said, not a car person).

I like the idea of more space inside the 5 door but I like the pedigree and looks of the 3 door. Really unsure which way to go.

Which way you go will depend on what you hope to do with the Jimny.

Basic transportation - pick one - either one. How many people do you need to move? Two? The three door is fine, three or four? The three door will be cramped and uncomfortable.

The Jimny is not designed to be a "town runabout", but that doesn't mean it can't be used that way, it just means it's not ideally suited for it. The three door is compact, easy to park, relatively economical to operate, and in fact makes an ideal "town runabout", with perhaps one drawback, on anything but the smoothest of surfaces, you'll find the ride choppy, something that is unavoidable in a short wheel base vehicle.

The five door will be marginally better in this regard, because of it's longer wheel base, but neither one will be an ideal vehicle for fast long distance travel, the "live axles" at front & rear aren't suited for that type of usage, they are however, what makes the Jimny (either model) a consummate off roader, so if off road usage is what you have in mind, a Jimny might be right up your alley.

For the weight capacity you'll have to wait on the published spec. The capacity is going to be determined by things like the suspension and the brakes. The rumors say both the three door & the five door will have the same K15b engine, which some people might feel suggests the heavier five door might be underpowered, that can be addressed by gearing the vehicle appropriately, and that same K15b is also used to power the larger heavier XL7, which is a three row, seven seater, so I wouldn't be too worried about that side of the equation.

There is however one major draw back to choosing a Jimny, you're going to need to have a lot of patience, from what I'm told Suzuki Australia is no longer taking orders, the wait list is already out of hand.

Thanks fordem, really appreciate the response. It will be used mainly for around town with just the girlfriend and I and sometimes a German Shepherd and Lab in the back. I am thinking the 3 door is going to be better as the back goes totally flat (better for dogs) whereas the 5 door the seats dont lie flat with the boot and really we only need the 2 seats as well. I have been to the dealership and the say its a 9 month wait for 3 doors and 5 door will start production in August and should be in Australia by November. So if what they are saying is correct, both should arrive around the same time.

the last time Suzuki had swb and lwb for the gen 2 Jimny the figures was like this:
LWB SJ413 max total: 1445kg Front / Rear: 870/575kg Load capacity 370kg
SWB SJ413 max total 1330kg Front / Rear: 800/530kg Load capacity: 350kg

Data from my own cars registratration this, so will vary between markets and models.

There may well be five door Jimnys in Australia in November, but, don't expect to be able to walk into the dealership and drive out with one, you're going to be putting your deposit down and waiting your turn.,

In most countries where the Jimny is sold, there is a wait list, more buyers than available vehicles, that's why there is a none month wait for the three doors, and the wait list for the five doors is likely to be longer.
