My 2001 Jimny has done all its miles on paved roads since last Spring. Yesterday, I wanted to take the car off round (We live on an estate with woodlands) and noticed that the 4H kept blinking instead of being 'permanently green'. An indication that the 4WD will not engage. I read that it's something that happens regularly on older Jimnys. I checked the electrics but all was good in that department.

What to do? Check all the pipework etc? Or making the step to old-school hand-operated front wheel locks, bypassing the original system? The system I had on my  Samurai in the late '90s.

What's your experience and advice?

Have you had a look at the Wiki page on diagnosing faults in the 4WD:

I am assuming you have a lever rather than switches?

You could get a flashing green light if the transfer box switch has failed or if the vacuum system has failed.

It could be simple, the switch or a leak in the vacuum system.

My car has a lever system. A nice job for the week between Christmas and NY when I can use a car ramp at a shop.

First thing is to check the front wheel bearings. When they start to go they can cause the vacuum system to leak. Checking them first can save a lot of frustration!

If they are both good then it will be a simple leak in one of the pipes. We can rule out the switch on the transfer case because if that was faulty you would have no 4wd light at all.

The easiest fix is to run full lengths of new hose (I use 4mm ID PVC hose, about £10 for 10m on eBay plus two 4mm tees), cable tying it to the now redundant original hoses.

My preferred fix is to replace the hoses and at the same time re-route them along the brake pipes, around the engine bay and down the brake hoses. This keeps them out of harms way and involves less laying on the ground!

This picture will help you get the correct hoses to the correct places on the hub.

 

I know many choose manual hubs as a simple option, but personally I find the vacuum system super convenient and simple to maintain.
