4x4 does its own engagement

Wife took car to get the Aircon fixed which they didn't however they did manage to install a gremlin. This gremlin selects 4x4 and 4x4L automatically while driving along, it has engaged in 4x4 but not 4x4L as the lights suggest. Trying to select 4x2 requires much button pushing and time but it can be done only to have a 4x4 mode magically select itself. I have checked all wires and plumbing visually and all is well, before I dive deeper does anyone have a suggestion.

The usual suspect is the wires at the transfer case end but if you have checked them out and nothing is obviously damaged then it could be the switch on transfer case. Be aware that it has a small ball bearing inside that acts as a detent and is very easily lost. The technician that attempted to do the air conditioning didn't for whatever reason interfere with the centre console and the 4x4 control module under it did they, I have had worse at garages?

Yes they had fiddled in the centre console however I have had a look there and all seems well. To get her home we pulled the fuse for the 4x4 box and although all the 4x4 lights were on the car drove well. Suzuki supposedly put the black box onto it but they say it reported nothing and as the fault in intermittent it could be so. I am thinking its the 4x4 controller box but happy for input before I do a technical tap on it with a hammer

I had a very similar problem, it slipped in to 4x4 after setting off and tried to go in to 4x4L, but of course it wouldn't whilst moving. It turned out to be the dashboard mounted switches, both the 4x4 and 4x4L switches were had become un-reliable and were making contact all on their own. I think the bulbs in the unit had put too much heat in to the switches and made them un-reliable.

I disconnected the unit and it stayed in 2WD. I obtained a replacement switch box for about £25 and that fixed the problem.

Taking the old unit apart, all that is in it is a small PCB with 3 x switches, if I can get something that goes in, it would be a spare unit.

Might be worth disconnecting the cable out of the dashboard switch unit first.

This is the PCB inside the 4x4 selector switch unit. This is my new one with LEDs in place of fillament lamps.

Thank you for that and the picture, I have driven the car and it has behaved for me so far. I will go and do some testing on the switches.
