Notwithstanding my intention last month to forego having a head unit at all and just have a bluetooth fed amp I now have a different problem. Temeraire is going to probably have a dab which may or may not have bluetooth unit if Spare Jimny is anything to go by probably a modest Pioneer. This will effectively be my first venture into the world of dab, is it any good for a Dirty Raver like myself (back to back old skool and hardcore all day at a volume that could offend a nightclub dj) and worth persisting with or am I just better off abandoning dab before I start and just install my beefy Sony bluetooth. I have decided that at least for a while until the newness wears off that I am going to stick with a head unit on the basis that the dashboard looks complete with one especially as these later ones have a proper pocket and everything. Any dab converts out there?

There are a lot of channels on DAB, including all of the regular stations you also get Classis Rock, Absolute Radio, Virgin, Virgin Anthems, etc, etc. Check out the stations here
getdigitalradio.com/your-stations/
So I have Absolute Classic Rock on my radio alarm clock
Radio 4 to and from work
Virgin Anthems sometimes on a weekend or Classic Rock again
Then there is Union Jack radio, Union Jack Rock andPlanet Rock, all good turned up to 11.

Ok cheers, so according to that I could have upwards of 2 stations that may offer something worth listening to. 3 if I include classic fm which I might occasionally have half an hour with if dad is in the car. Not exactly spoiled for choice and I guess there will be adverts and inane jibber for good measure. Hmmm not looking promising. I suppose I can try it for a few days before I decide.

Whilst DAB coverage is good in the South East, it suffers a lot of black spots "up north". You may find that good old FM is better. A DAB radio has both Dab and FM normally

Sounds like (no pun intended) MP3 is your friend Lambert. My Xtrons head unit has DAB/FM (don't use FM now) and iPod/iPhone interface and also a microSD card slot. The iPhone I/F is a little bit fiddly and the on-screen display not that great so I copied all of my music (mostly rock of one sub genre or other) on to a microSD card and use an app called Power Amp, which has a great music interface.
DAB can drop out quickly away from populated centres, you can see coverage maps for your area here

Most DAB car radios will switch automatically to FM is DAB reception is lost.
So if you are for instance listening to radio 2 and you lose DAB reception, the radio will switch to R2 FM and you might not even notice.
Once DAB reception is restored the radio will switch back.
However if the DAB station is not on FM as well, the radio will generally go silent.
