Chassis factory holes - JB74 was created by jonaslj
Hi folks,
I just bought a Jimny JB74 and I was reading some people protect the chassis against rust. As I live at by the sea, rust affects most of the cars around.
Recently I discovered the chassis has a few holes and there are some companies selling plastic covers for some of these holes. Link below:
JB74 Classis plastic covers - AliExpress
Any idea what are these chassis holes for? Is it a good idea to use these plastic cover to prevent rust?
Best regards,
Jonas

Hi Jonas,
Bad idea in my opinion. Chassis plugs trap moisture and prevent water drainage if you ever go for a wade. They also trap condensation and do little to prevent rust.
Better to simply get the vehicle treated with a wax product of your choice, inside the chassis and outside, keep all drain holes clear.
Enjoy the Jimny.
Mike

Hi Jonas, I have 2 Jimnys here in NZ.
I suggest you leave the drainage/ venting holes open
For many years I have used aerosol cans of deodorised fish oil with lanolin available here and Australia. from motor accessory shops. CRC is one brand that's sold here or Lanotech, about £8 to £10 here,
I drive skifields each day through snow and slush. One Nissan 4x4 I sold is still going after 30 years since I treated it's chassis ,door drainage holes etc.
2 cans will be plenty for each vehicle,,spray liberaly every hole orifice, drain holes, every seam in and around the engine bay behind headlamps etc.
It's and cheap easy to do every now and again ,I never jacked the vehicles up as there is enough room with a 4x4.
I hope this helps.

DO NOT plug any of the chassis holes! Not making enough factory drain holes in the chassis is no#1 reason why Wrangler's chassis fails catastrophically. That is the main and most common issue with Jeep Wranglers.
Like others said, spray the cavities in the chassis with a suitable protection. I recommend a dedicated professional automotive cavity wax. Dinitrol, Bilt Hamber, Mike Sanders, Car Systems, 3M and Valvoline/Tectyl are among top quality manufacturers. Do not experiment with DIY/natural materials like fish oil, linseed oil, olive oil etc.

Thanks Bosanek! Really interesting to know this about the Wrangler's chassis. Very convinced about keeping all holes opened!
