I see that replacing the rear drum brakes with disc brakes in a Jimny is a relatively popular modification.

What are the advantages for a normally (predominently on road and light to moderate occasional off road) used Jimny?

And what are the advantages for a Jimny used as an off road mule?


I don't think that a Jimny needs extra stopping power.
Is the modification feasible in vehicles equipped with ABS brakes?


Any disadvantages?

They are certainly better if you wade in muddy water as you don't need to strip it to get the mud out after the event. They almost self clean and a simple hose with water and they are ready to go. They also "dry" quicker if you wade, which means you are back to 100% braking efficiency quicker.
That said you need to get in the mud a lot, normally the drums are ok, it's only the odd occasion it's full of stones etc.
Just my opinion based on my experience with my 100% drum braked Land Rover.

Ease of maintenance a big plus point in my opinion. Easier to work on than drums, replacing pads/brake disc is a quick simple job rather than faffing with the springs and pins in a drum brake. Also a lot quicker to have a rear half shaft out and refitted.

Rebuild kit with new pistons and seals costs very little and is an easy half hour job (for the Renault calipers anyway).

Braking performance is improved, especially after fitting larger tyres. Handbrake definitely more positive and holds better.

I'd still run rear discs even if my Jimny didn't see any dirt.

I like the idea of rear disc brakes for more stopping when towing but it would be another modification to inform the insurance of and really while it would make maintenance easier I haven't had to do anything of any consequence to the rear brakes in 9 years on Dreadnaught.
