Engine replacement was created by Merz
Hi Everyone. So my Jimny world turned upside down last week Monday. On Monday, I took my Jimny for a small service with a family friend / mechanic, as i was going on a long journey this weekend. However, on the way home from the mechanic, the engine overheated and i broke down on roadside (or should i say, the vehicle broke down). It turns out, the mechanic left the radiator cap off after flushing my radiator. We replaced the cap and filled her up with water, on the roadside, and i managed to get home ok. The came Tuesday morning...
Tuesday morning the engine stutters and splutters and the engine light is on. The car has minimal power, water pours out the exhaust and the engine light is on solid. In a nutshell, the engine is poked.
The engine already has 200,000kms + on it, so am thinking of doing a full replacement, rather than a repair. This i was hoping would be straight forward, but am battling to find the right info.
My engine is an M13A engine. The picture is here M13A Dean.
I have found some low mileage second had engines around the country (i live in South Africa) and these engines are also M13A engines. But they look so different to mine. They pictured as Option A and Option B. I was hoping to buy option A but it looks different to mine.
Anyone know why they are different if they have the same code M13A and if they are compatible with my 2008 M13A engine?
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
Regards
Dean

One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

From the pictures they appear to be none vvt examples. On your 2008 the left side of the cam cover projects forward, it's where the gubbins are that make the vvt work. It is possible to use a none vvt motor but it's a great deal easier to find a straight swap.

Aside from the lack of VVT, any of those engines would be suitable. The M13a engine was fitted to lots of different Suzukis and is dressed differently depending on a number of factors, but the block and head are the important bits and they are consistent throughout. An engine from another Jimny would make life easier, but any of those engines will work by swapping over parts already on your Jimny. But best to find a VVT one first though, identifiable by the bulge on the end of the rock cover that Lambert describes.

I am really battling to find a straight swap. If I read your reply correctly, I have a VVT engine. Is there any other engine which is a good swap, other than the M13A non VVT engines?

Any of the vvt m series engines are a viable swap so 15 16 and 18. Effectively the swap is just the block and head complete the rest just swaps from the donor.
