I'm not sure that weight is the only consideration here. Think about the sail area of a pair of 5.5 mtr kayaks (not to mention overhang). You could well finish up with a vehicle that is not very pleasant to drive and very difficult to park. In your position I would seriosly think about a trailer or better still a 4x4 pickup.

Good point that. In the UK there is a maximum rearward protection limit of something like 1.5m off the top of my head. Don't know about NZ but it is probably something similar.

Just had a look and less than a meter is ok between 1 and 2 metre needs the end clearly marked beyond 2 needs special attention and notified authorities. Check out the limitations for your country.

The overhang and general size of said Kayaks is more the issue, you can put plenty on the roof of a GEN 3, even the soft top.
