Gen 4 Road Tyres

Got my Jimny primarily to combat the pretty awful rural roads I drive on the east coast of Barbados. Off-roading isn’t really on the cards but the ground clearance is a real benefit on some roads that have suffered severe land slippage leading to significant undulations in the road surface.

I’m looking at larger/better tyres for improved wet road-holding and to be honest ... bigger looks better.

Finding road going tyres in the 215/75r15 size was a bit of a challenge, but I’m leading towards Firestone Destination LE2’s. I’d appreciate any inputs on this selection specifically wether the side wall on a road tire is up to being mounted on the standard Jimny wheel.

I recognize that most members seem to be off-road enthusiasts, but has anybody put road tyres on their Jimny. I don’t know if a road going Jimny with larger tyres seems superfluous but finding suitable 195’s is also a stretch.

Just want to get an appropriate set of 215’s with good wet traction

I have a gen3 so not quite a direct comparison but I haven't had any problems at all running bf Goodrich urban terrain and I use my Jimny as a posh side by side quad bike on my hill farm as well as enjoying assertive driving on country roads.

Ultimately though it is a personal choice and in reality any tyre from the premium manufacturers will perform very well.

Thanks for the input. I get the idea that a tyre from a “premium manufacturer” should be fine; but would I be mistaken to suggest that the original Dunlop Grandtrek AT20’s are pretty poor performers in the wet?

Dunno. UK cars tend to come with Bridgestone Dueler which are a reasonably competent middle range tyre. Haven't heard much about the dunlop grand trek. Personally I would be looking at offerings from the likes of BF Goodrich, Maxxis, Kumho, General, Michelin and Yokohama, but I'm a tyre snob so....

An old adage from the motorcycle world tells you that the best tyres on the market are the ones you personally have most faith in. This should be good reasoning for Jim4 as well, I'm looking at the Continental ATR. I have a totally irrational aversion to Bridgestones, if you don't like a tyre from the start it's unlikely to grow on you.

Finally got the Destination LE 2’s and I love them. On really bad surfaces there’s not much difference between the Dunlops and the Firestones but on average roads there’s a significant improvement in ride comfort.

The new tyres really shine in the wet where I can now corner and stop with confidence. Bear in mind I found the Dunlop’s to be absolutely horrendous on wet surfaces.

Only downside is reduced gas mileage; I’ve dropped from 27.3 to 26.8 mpg. I’m currently running them at 26psi and the ride is very comfortable; not sure it’s worth upping the pressure in search of better economy.

Oh .... most importantly ... even though they’re not knobby A/T’s they do look the business!
