Camp expedition trailers

I have been looking at the options for a camp trailer. Thing is that the readymade ones are about twenty 11 times bigger than the Jimny or the ones that are about the right size are unbraked and way too heavy once loading. Ok so I make a small one myself with brakes but under UK law I am effectively no longer allowed to home brew or indeed significantly alter a trailer.

Is there an option out there that I have missed, a light ish, braked, approved, off road capable, Jimny scale camp trailer?

You can ( I believe) just purchase an approved trailer frame and put whatever you like on the top so long as you stay within its rated limits. That's how the chap who made our camping pod operated, he purchased the frame and put his own top on it.
Or buy an old caravan frame and chop it up, "it was done years ago office" in the very unlikely event that you get stopped.
You can also purchase blank rating plates on ebay, ready to stamp , not suggesting anything.

I'm always wary of the statement "it was like that when I got it". It makes anything sound suspicious.

Time was I had a sankey for the defender and really I should have kept it as it was perfect for a rtt but to get it behind Dreadnaught would have been a good lot of work. I have considered something like a halfords type trailer but somehow even the heavy duty ones seem fragile.

The Halfords (Erde ?) Trailers are made of tin but they are fairly strong when bolted together. I had one (122) a few years back as a "haul it all" camping trailer. I made a custom top out of plywood that made it deeper and held 3 adult bikes, they sell similar made out of weak plastic. To be fair it worked well and looked the part. I did think a roof tent on the top of the trailer would be ideal for me for get away weekends, but wife wanted something warmer so I sold it and got a teardrop caravan. Jimny tows it ok, but it's bang on the unbraked limit.

Or you can just homebrew one and stamp a date prior to 2012 on it. :side:

This is interesting. I had been looking into building a sort of camping trailer idea as the next project after ulysses.

I would want it to at least have the same wheels/tyres as the car (for clearance and the look of it). This means a tricky PCD to find in a trailer axle. The rest is pretty straightforward stuff. Especially if it was pre 2012 :whistle:

Current thoughts are around sourcing an old 'sankey' trailer to start from, though they are pretty heavy.
