That was always the case. Back in 1999 when we bought our firsty Jimny there was only one trim level in the UK, JLX, that had steel wheels, power steering, electric mirrors, air bags and a very basic central locking with no remote facility. Within a few years there were two models and the more expensive cars tended to alloy wheels, in some cases leather seats, front fog lights and some had air con but for a while Suzuki sold an air con kiit for the basic car.
At the time in the asian market there was a more basic car sold with a lesser spec than the JLX but not in Europe or Australia.

Autocar review, they are doing a trip from London to a remote location in Scotland to get a Christmas tree and then take it back to London on the roof..
