The difference between the two differentials is in size not ratios. The 4x4 system opperates by double isolation of the front wheels, firstly drive is disconnected in the transfer box to the front propshaft and diff secondly the front diff and halfshafts are disconnected in the hubs using a vacuum system. This vacuum system is not the most robust thing in the world and can easily develop leaks causing 4x4 malfunction. There are a few ways to combat this first is to keep the pipes and actuators well maintained and regularly inspected or block them off and fit manual free wheel hubs or modify the Vacuum hubs so they remain locked. Manual hubs offer the option to have 2low but at the price of having to get out of the car to engage 4x4. As mentioned above the other route to 2low is the electrical route of interruption of the signal sent from the transfer box to the vacuum controller so that it doesn't activate the hubs. Obviously neither of these work with modified locked hubs as there's then only one isolation point for the drive in the transfer box. Personally I have manual hubs.

Towing your load would depend on traction.
If your on paved then surely 2wd will provide enough grip, and if a surface where the wheels can spin then 4wd fine.

The 410 transfer box doesn't have a switch to control the hubs, but with slightly different wiring you could use a switch to control them and achieve the same thing.
