As a cheaper alternative how about making some wooden spacers out of a few layers of ply to lift your existing axel stands? Or better still some nice flat bits of oak? That's what I do at work when my stands aren't tall enough. Never use bricks or concrete blocks to do the same as that's asking for an accident.

Axle stands lately scare the bejusus out of me. I replaced a viscous coupling on a Freelander earlier this year and had all wheels off the ground on four stands (needed the wheels to rotate) and hated being under there.
Why not try some ramps or even some jacking ramps?
I have a regular size creeper which suits my size but then I am only 6' 1" though I once had a Silverline creeper which was short compared to others.
