I've got a 20" wilderness lighting light bar on the front bumper of my l200. Couldn't be happier with the light output, beam pattern and build quality, but it wasn't as cheap as the rubbish eBay ones on the back. Oh and it's E marked as a type approved driving light, but that's another can of worms.

I am sure that the ones on the roof would give you a better all round light pattern but a roof mounted one would
get hit too much on mine without some sort of protection. Mounted in the front bumper still does a fine job and its
a little more protected as mine is in the recess of the bumper. Not sure but I think I found some info when looking
for mine that 20" is the largest you can go if you want it wired to come on with main beam for road use.

Another thing about roof lights that they can also light up your bonnet, so vision into the darker areas beyond that is compromised

And things on the roof get hit by branches. And they make wind noise. And you have to drill holes in your car to get power up there. It's generally a bit of a silly place to put lights. Bumper lights are definitely the way forward.
I've always fancied some little spot lights in the wing mirrors for lighting up the verge immediately in front of and beside the car.
