I downloaded the ordnance survey os map finder. There was another one that I can't remember the name of. I just searched in the App Store for ordnance survey maps.
It gets pricey though, thee first os one I downloaded charges 69p for a 500k 'tile' or £1.99 for a 250k tile. To cover an area the size that my paper map covers I'm looking at purchasing over 20 tiles.
Here's how it looks. I haven't had a chance to use it the car yet as my iPad hasn't got 3G so I stick to the paper map for now but as soon as I get an iPhone il use it same way I use sat nav.
Note the byways marked in red/pink crosses and dots. I have come across byways that are marked on the map as a BOAT but when I've gone to drive them they are sign posted as a bridle way. I'm not sure what way the law would tip in this situation?
That area shown in the picture is the size one tile at 69p. You can see how it can add up

Do you reckon 1:50k is good enough not sure what extra you ll be able to see on the 1:25k? I have also found another one called outdoors where you can buy the whole os map for eg se England for 29.99 and works offline using gps on iPhone or iPad I might take the plunge and try it

We lane all the time, we use Memory Map os landranger maps 1:50,000.
Actually just selling some on here - see for sale section....
I've just upgraded to the new 2014 maps that are in full HD, costs about £130.
We use them on iphone, ipad, and also on memory maps own gps.
If the lane is marked as a bridle way when you get there then it is a bridle way , confirm this with the Rights of Way officer, do not drive a lane just because the map says it is so, maps are old as soon as they are published and access can change at any time.
You cannot trust a map, research your trip on the maps and contact the relevant Rights of Way officer at the local council.

I am outside of the regions your selling thanks anyway. Do you find 1.50k is good enough or would 1.25k be better I'm not sure what the visual differences would be anyway ?

1:50 landranger is fine, it's what everyone uses for laning.
Memory Map is also what everyone else uses, you can send recorded routes to each other by email from your last trip, generate a route on your PC of where you plan to go on your next trip and email it across to friends once you have checked each lanes current status with the ROW officer.
