Wow, you guys really know your stuff.

I have to be honest, I'm not a heavy duty user
and it makes me cringe to say it but it's more form
Over function in this instance - like someone
said above it makes the trucks look badass
and that's what I'm looking for!

I'm from Southport (which is near Preston and
Liverpool) so I'm going to give the guys in Lancashire
And Wales a call see what they can do for me.

I passed my welding exams with distinction so I'm
Pretty sure I could weld one up, but like the dude
Says - is it worth my time and worry should the worst
Happen when I could have one professionally made
Fit and forget!

Cheers guys!

Hi, this is my KAP cage to which I plan to fit an internal diagonal, like Martin has to his. I only use the jimny for playdays, but do get carried away at times

I am local to you just the other side of the Ribble estuary at Warton. I got my cage second hand on e'bay, then got the guys at West coast off road centre at Banks to fit it as It was 1. Very heavy and 2. I don't trust myself welding it on.

I'm pretty sure KAP at Keighley would supply you the cage flat pack as you can weld, But if I was to have the welding skills i'd make a fair few changes to my cage.

I think you have to consider what you want a cage to do when deciding what to buy / fit.

I have an external cage which at this time has no cross bracing at all. I know it will not save my life in a roll and have known this since before having it made and fitted. I consider this when driving.

I had mine made and fitted by my friend Grant who is a welder, fabricator and engineer by trade and a very experienced off roader. He told me from the outset that my cage is a tree rubbing cage and not a roll cage and that should it go on it's side, there was every chance the cage would flex and touch the body to some degree.

I know to make it safer I need at least one diagonal through the car, like Martin has done - and I plan this for the future, especially as our offroading gets more extreme each year that goes by, when we get to do it.

My Jim Jam has been on it's side and the cage did just kiss the body, however, I have also clumped many a tree and bank and would have to have re-shelled the car several times over by now if it were not for the cage I have.

So to save the car and you, have an external cage connected to an internal cage. It will weigh more but still less than a similarly equipped Landrover.

I think you have to consider what you are doing in your Jim Jam and what could go wrong. If you risk going over properly, rather than laying it down on it's side gently for a rest, you must have a proper cage. If there is no risk of going over properly, maybe a tree rubbing external cage is all you need.

It's a personal choice thing - you pays your money, you makes your choice! As long as it's an informed choice, in my view that's Ok.
