alright guys,

I'm looking at fitting a rear winch, I have almost fitted the rear bumper. the next step is obviously ti find a winch for it.

It needs to be operated via airspool as the winch will be mounted from the top

any help would be appreciated

To me you only have two choices for air freespool, 8274 or Goodwinch Goldfish.

I would then discount the 8274 due to it's height for where you are putting it as you'll be tight for space height wise.

They are also best from a watertight point of view, hence the name Goldfish.

There are other well sealed winches on the market, such as Warrior's more expensive range. However they don't have air freespool available so you'd have to pay out lots and they have an in the drum brake which will create heat in the drum as you pay out. This may damage a synthetic rope.

Goodwinch use a cone brake outside the winch.

Kingone winches are the same as Goodwinch tds but I'm not sure if they are waterproofed to the same level. Also, Goodwinch do a good offer on a rope when you buy the winch, so I'd stick with Goodwinch.

Are you looking at doing some comps then or just wanting to be able to pull yourself out of Goo backwards?

A Tds Goldfish from Goodwinch is the best value - if not the cheapest - option. They make a terrific rear winch. The number of top class challenge trucks running them on the rear is testimony to that.

The cheaper winches are likely to let you down - and that's the last thing you want if you are using it to lower yourself down a cliff. When it happens - you suddenly realise how good value the Goldfish winches really are!

David Bowyer, who runs Goodwinch, is friendly, helpful and probably knows more about them than anybody - so he's who I would give my money to!

That is what im going for and at £400 i would say it was a good buy, i have a king one at the front and i understand it to be the same as a goodwinch/superwinch. hence why the king one can also have an airspool fitted to it.

Kirky- I'm looking at getting into the low end comp stuff kinda got bored driving round p and p sites for no real reason and just breaking a truck for the sake of it. she is taking a while to build as im trying to decorate/ redo a house at the same time as the truck, so now the house is acceptable the truck is taking priority. pics can be seen here bigjimny.com/index.php/forum/8-my-jimny/...rking-progress#36781

cheers for the help guys

I know what you mean, I've been at that point for some time, especially as our club site is quite extreme.

I'd love to get into comps but don't have the weekends off. I also love watching and photographing comps and that costs me nothing but the fuel to get to them! I then don't need to buy new ropes etc.

I've been enjoying greenlaning a bit more recently and can do that any day of the week and we incorporate geocaching into it, giving laning some purpose.

The waterproofing of Goodwinches will be important to you as it will not be most accessible for regular servicing, so if it can be left longer between servicing it will ease the maintenance for you.

You might also want to upgrade your front winch motor to a Bowmotor 1 or 2 and keep your old motor as a spare. My Superwinch original motor died at a comp and I bought a barely used Bowmotor 1 second hand and it does make it a little quicker and stronger. Plus you'll have a spare, if funds permit of course.

As Simon says, Mr Bowyer does look after you. I've been told you can get winches much cheaper from him at Landrover shows. So if you have one near you he is attending, it might be worth taking a bundle of cash, at the least you'll save the postage and at best you might save on the air freespool and rope.

that sounds like a plan :D

I'm going to run 12v winchs on 24v to to give some speed. i'll get through motors quicker but then the speed of winching will be worth it. i opened a thread on this subject about a month ago 12/24v winch wiring
