Roof box was created by zaine
Who currently has one?

i did a quick search on the site but couldnt find any threads

Basically with myself, wife, baby and dog all in the jimny its going to get a little cramped with all the camping gear so obvious choice is a roof box

Id like a little info on size / makes / fitment etc as i have little to no knowledge of this sort of thing :P

thanks in advance
Z

Why not get a small trailer? Putting stuff in a roofbox on a Jimny isn't like loading a roofbox on a family saloon. Just a tad higher.

we had thought about that but roof box was our choice as the most common places we camp arent very easy to get to in a car never mind with a trailer lol

was more wondering what sort of size people fit?

We have a reasonable size Halfrauds one.The plain design ones were on sale, but they gave us a carbon effect one by accident

I have thought about using it on the Jimny, but it'll throw the CofG so high i can't see it being great around corners. This year will be the first year dad uses it on his Freelander 2... so height could definately be an issue there ;)

I'd go with a trailer, they're not that big or difficult to manouver, but I've been and got the license. If you've never driven with a trailer before you may want to check out speed limits etc... and maybe drive it round town a few times to get the hang of it.

I had a roof box fitted when the Jim was bought. It's even a quality one (found it online for about 700 EUR), was quite surprised. It fits on two roof bars across the factory rails and locks in place with a small "special" key, so it can't be stolen.

Quite a bit noisy on the road, increased fuel consumption by about 1 liter/100 km and couldn't fit in most underground parkings due to the added height  took it off and removed the rear seats (which might not be an option to you; maybe only remove one seat in the back and pack lightly ?

Hapro Roady 350 - 300 liter, methinks. Still looked big on top of the Jimny :) watch out for the max load, it's 30 kg I believe (limitation of the roof rails, not the box itself). Here's some pics from when I had it fitted:

Ours is a 470L one... so mid range
I fill it with kites... like real kites, kitesurfing kites ;)

Have you thought about a box mounted on a towbar rack? Not actually towing... so none of the trouble with speed and they are actually high enough to use when on some tame greenlanes
Could be very expensive with a towbar, rack and bag

I have a high end rack from Thule... and its great for the kite buggy and bikes!
