Yet how many Landrovers do you see on a trailer being towed by a van that isn't supposed to tow that much!

It's suprising how heavy a trailer with a caged and winch equipped Jimny on must weigh and what you need to legally tow it!

I had a little session working out what I'd need as a tow vehicle if I were to take my Jimjam off the road and use it as an offroad plaything only on SORN. Trouble is that tow vehicle would have to be my daily and be capable of greenlaning on some serious lanes - which would end up being a LR I think - which is not cheap unless it's a rusty old Disco, plus the cost of a trailer.

how about a cherokee - tows 3.5 tonnes has a diesel auto and 3 different 4wd modes full time high, part time high (centre diff locked) and 4wd low

Couldn't agree more Darthloakie about the Cherokee. We bought a new 2.8 crd auto in 2004 and its been a fantastic car. The only thing that went wrong was the alternator last year. Its now done 77,000 and regularly tows my Wrangler backwards and forwards across France.

I think the test was a bit OTT but there are a'lot of idiots out there who cannot handle a trailer safely on the roads..

Yes I remember years ago when I used to drive a service bus for West Yorkshire Bus Co.
I had just cleared the arch at Bolton Abbey, when a car and caravan came round the corner. After about 15 attempts to reverse the outfit, he uncoupled caravan and turned it round. Then coupled thecar back up and drove off. Having about a dozen schoolkids all watching can't have helped.

I've looked at the old XJ's but would not want one of their VM Diesel engined ones as they are supposed to be crap and blow head gaskets a fair bit, they are very unrefined, so I would have to have a 4 litre petrol. They can be bought for throw away money these days which kind of offsets the fuel consumption. They need a bit of modifying to get decent sized tyres on though, and so starts another project!

I have to park on the street at work and there is a lack of parking so I currently drive a Micra as my daily as it's cheap and easy to park and replaced my Vespa when it got written off. The parking issue is the main thing holding me back from getting a tow vehicle and trailer!
