I figure I have to either weld the weld or
wack it with a ball-pein hammer to spread the metal to seal it or
chemi-weld it with something like JB Weld 2 part bond.
Given that it is directly under the petrol tank and I am a lousy welder upside down, I'm mostly inclined to go the "Wack it with a round hammer" way.
If I weld it, should it be drained?
I've temporarily cleaned it with detergent, that is what the drop is...

Chemical steel would be the next choice

Looks to me like it is cracking around the weld, it will open up and split chemical metal.
I wouldn't weld it with oil dripping through, so I'd remove it, invert the axle, vee the crack and arc weld it back together, then I'd likely smear chemical metal over the top in case the weld had a small pore.
For the trouble I'd just get a casing someone has pulled the diff out of.
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

stevedumptruck63 wrote: hi,i have worked with hydraulics most of my working life, and in my experiance if i have ever had to try and weld a ram ETC,the fluid must always be drained and cleaned if not you just chase the hole,i know the axle is not a ram and the fluids are different but you could end up with the same problem,(please correct me if iam wrong guys) so i would be inclined to go for the chemical resin, unless you are prepared to strip down the ram, good luck with the job which ever way you choose
As said
I would drain and clean it, if it was me welding it to stop contamination of the weld, tig would be best but it will need to be cleaner than if you mig it. failing that chemical resin.
