How many revs? was created by brianjb61
Having had my jimny for a week now and trying to adjust my style of driving to suit, I'm trying to work how to get best fuel consumption. Any ideas?

I'm trying to resist the temptation to get it dirty before I make sure everything apart form the 4 wheel drive is all working properly.

the way to get the best fuel consumption from the jimny is,,,,
park it in the garage and throw away the key.

I've found sticking to roads with a 30/40mph speed limit works for me as soon as you get on a dual carriage way or motor way and take it above 55 the fuel level drops pretty quick!

mind you i've got a rocklobster and bigger wheels than standard.

Keep it on standard road tyres
Blow the tyres up hard. (Don't go mad, just use the upper limit of the recommended pressures)
Try not to let the rev counter go below 1700 when pulling (or it will shudder and vibrate)
or above 3000 (plenty fast enough in 5th)
Don't press the accelerator more than 1" or so.
Never ever touch the brakes (except in an emergency)
Don't knock it out of gear when slowing down (coasting), this uses more fuel than overrunning because the fuel is cut off above tick over.

You might get as much as 33mpg around town, and 40+ on a run

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

If it is an auto, you need to go fast enough to get the torque converter to lock up, and not let it slow down enough to unlock, likely keep it at 45-50mph. (gets interesting in town centres ;) )

Thanks for the reply's. It's on standard wheels and tryes, I was aiming to stick to the 3k mark it just takes a bit of getting used. After my terrano, anything over about 22mph will be bonus.

I had a Terrano (Ford Maverick actually) 2.7TD.
Cruised at 80 no problem, did about 33-35MPG.

Should have kept it really.......

Its natural cruising speed is 50, if you drive it on the rev limiter and keep it around 3k it seems to be the most economical.
I drive about 18 miles to work and fortunately i get stuck behind wagons so i'm only just managing 50ish anyway. If i use any road where i can do 60 it ruins my economy.

Black Jimny's don't get stuck!

3K it is then, I'll have a play around at that and see how I get on.

The next thing to get to grips with is this push button 4 wheel drive.

Mine sits on 100kph (60mph) @ 4,100 revs and is happy to do that for thousands of k's with only stops every 500-550k's or so for fuel. It takes forever to get anywhere here in Oz. Cruising around town it depends on the speed limit which is mostly 80kph (50mph) and that is 3200 revs in 5th.

The Jimny is happy reving freely (motorbike heritage), what is doesn't take kindly to is lugging. Ie don't let the revs drop, keep 'em up by changing down and the car will run forever.

I think that your main aim with the Jimny should be to enjoy the trip, not worry or concern yourself about speed and revs. You will tell by ear how happy the Jimny is and what revs/economy it is happiest with... it is alive ya know. Not an inert lump of tin and plastic like lesser beasts. :)
